01 · Product introduction

Overview

UGREEN 25051 USB 3.0 to 2.5GbE Ethernet Adapter (CM648) is a CM648 multi-gigabit network adapter with the documented RTL8156BG controller, short integrated lead and explicit driver/path requirements.

This exact-model guide separates link-rate ceilings from real throughput, explains what the entire cable or radio path must support, and states when operating-system or driver compatibility is conditional.

Research combines exact live UGREEN India product media with exact-model primary UGREEN material. Similar-looking adapters can use different chipsets, radios, speed ceilings and software.

Source reconciliation

Exact sources establish CM648/25051, RTL8156BG, USB-A 3.0 and 10/100/1000/2500Mbps. Official driver availability covers Windows/macOS/Linux, but regional exact guidance says drivers are required on systems other than Windows 11 and macOS, so no blanket plug-and-play statement is made. Exact India material mentions some Android OTG devices; this remains device-dependent. Cat5e can carry 2.5GBASE-T in a qualified channel, while Cat6 is recommended for a predictable new installation. No PoE, VLAN, PXE, jumbo-frame or Wake-on-LAN claim is included.

Key features

01

Up to 2.5Gbps link

The RJ45 link ceiling is 2.5Gbps. Real application throughput is lower because of Ethernet/IP overhead, storage, CPU and endpoint limits.

02

USB-A 3.0 host

Use a USB-A 3.0 host port rather than USB 2.0 when aiming above Gigabit.

03

RTL8156BG

RJ45 link modes: 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps automatic negotiation.

04

15cm lead

Official driver availability covers Windows, macOS and Linux families.

03 · Connector clarity

Every interface and indicator explained

01

USB-A 3.0 host plug

Provides upstream data and adapter power. USB 2.0 backward operation can constrain performance below the multi-gigabit target.

02

RJ45 multi-gigabit socket

Auto-negotiates 10/100/1000/2500Mbps with compatible network equipment.

03

Network status indicators

Report link/activity. Read the negotiated speed in the host or switch because indicators are not an application-throughput meter.

04

Approximately 15cm integrated TPE lead

Keeps the adapter portable while reducing strain; avoid sharp folds and pulling.

05

Aluminium enclosure

Helps dissipate controller heat and should remain exposed to air.

04 · Performance planning

Link-rate ceilings and real throughput

The RJ45 link ceiling is 2.5Gbps. Real application throughput is lower because of Ethernet/IP overhead, storage, CPU and endpoint limits.

The adapter falls back to 1Gbps, 100Mbps or 10Mbps when any active network component cannot negotiate 2.5GbE.

USB-A 3.0 provides host-link headroom; plugging into USB 2.0 can become the dominant bottleneck.

A complete 2.5GbE route needs a compatible driver, USB 3 host controller, 2.5GbE router/switch/NAS port and qualified four-pair cabling.

Multi-gigabit local transfers can be faster than broadband. An internet test cannot isolate the adapter unless the service and every WAN/LAN port are also faster than 1Gbps.

The 2.5Gb figure is a negotiated Ethernet ceiling and requires a full compatible multi-gigabit route.

05 · Complete path

What the host, cable or radio route must support

Use a USB-A 3.0 host port rather than USB 2.0 when aiming above Gigabit.

Use a 2.5GbE-capable router, switch, modem or NAS port.

A qualified Cat5e path can support 2.5GBASE-T; Cat6 is the practical recommendation for a new or uncertain installation.

Install the current exact CM648/RTL8156 driver when the operating system requires it.

Verify the negotiated link at the host and network equipment, then test between capable local endpoints.

Exact live artwork correctly requires the router, Ethernet switch or server endpoint to support 2.5GbE.

06 · Network behaviour

Standards, negotiation and operating roles

RJ45 link modes: 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps automatic negotiation.

Exact controller: Realtek RTL8156BG.

The adapter creates one Ethernet interface; router/DHCP equipment normally provides IP, gateway and DNS settings.

The USB-A connection supplies adapter bus power and data only; it is not a charging output or USB pass-through hub.

The RJ45 socket supplies no IEEE PoE or passive power, and no VLAN/PXE/jumbo/Wake-on-LAN promise is made.

Ceiling, not a promise

A port, radio or USB label is a signalling ceiling. Real performance depends on the complete path, protocol overhead, local conditions and the devices at both ends.

09 · Usability

Setup and usability guidance

  1. Confirm CM648 / SKU 25051 and obtain the exact current driver before removing an existing network connection if needed.
  2. Connect the USB-A plug directly to a USB 3.0 host port.
  3. Connect a known-good four-pair Ethernet cable to a 2.5GbE-capable network port.
  4. Wait for the interface to appear and install the official exact driver when the OS requires it.
  5. Confirm IP address, gateway and negotiated Ethernet rate.
  6. Use a fast local 2.5GbE endpoint to test the adapter before relying on an internet-speed result.
UGREEN 25051 USB-A connector identification artwork
SKU 25051 connects to USB-A; buyers needing a native USB-C plug should choose the exact USB-C sibling instead.

10 · Software

Driver and operating-system guidance

Official driver availability covers Windows, macOS and Linux families.

Regional exact guidance identifies Windows 11 and macOS as native-operation cases while other Windows releases may need the exact driver.

Linux support depends on kernel, distribution, CPU architecture, build tools and Secure Boot/module-signing policy.

Android OTG compatibility is conditional on the exact mobile device, OS and physical host adapter arrangement.

Do not market the product as universally driver-free merely because it works natively on one tested OS.

Business-managed systems may block external network interfaces or third-party driver installation.

Driver discipline

Match the exact SKU, chipset, operating-system version and CPU architecture. A driver for a similar enclosure can be incompatible with the hardware inside.

11 · Verified scope

What this product does

  • Adds an auto-negotiating 2.5GbE-capable RJ45 interface to a supported USB-A 3.0 host.
  • Falls back to 1Gbps, 100Mbps or 10Mbps to match the connected network path.
  • Uses the exact documented RTL8156BG controller, 15cm lead and aluminium enclosure.

Troubleshooting by symptom

01

No Ethernet interface appears

Try a direct USB 3.0 port and install the exact CM648/RTL8156 driver for the OS.

02

Link negotiates at 1Gbps

Verify both endpoints and every intermediate device support 2.5GbE, then replace the cable with a known-good Cat6 lead.

03

Link drops to 100Mbps

Inspect or replace the cable and wall terminations; damaged or missing pairs commonly cause this mode.

04

Internet result is below 2.5Gbps

Check service and router WAN/LAN limits, then use a capable local endpoint to isolate the adapter.

05

Connection resets under load

Update the driver, test another direct USB 3.0 port, shorten the Ethernet route and improve airflow.

It works. I don’t know what happened to the dedicated Ethernet port on my laptop, but this thing let me not worry about it.It functions well. I don’t need 10GbE, not even the 2.5GbE that this thing provides. Since it uses USB, it doesn’t take up my only USB-C port, so that’s nice connectivity wise.I thought I would need to install some software [at the very least some drivers], but I guess I forgot how electronics work sometimes, so all I had to do was plug it in, and I was all good. Basically, easy to install.

I have two of these, used as a quick and easy way to speed up access between my main workstation and a Synology DS920+ NAS (which is now connected through the USB port and one of these dongles, rather than through an Ethernet port). I have a 10 Port 2.5Gb unmanaged Ethernet switch in between (which also has a couple of 10Gb ports). I am able to get sustained 2Gb/sec transfer rates when moving larger files. For tips on how to set things up with the Synology, search YouTube.

Excellent well-made 2.5G Ethernet dongle. I was about to return the product because I thought it was not delivering the promised speed improvement. I was using iperf3 between two Windows machines connected with a 2.5G switch. The speed in one direction was great, but in the reverse it was worse than the previous 1 Gigabit Eth connection. Luckily I discovered that iperf3 does not work well on Windows, and I used ntttcp instead, as recommended by Microsoft. Now I could confirm 2.5G speeds in both directions.

I thought that I was wise to buy the cheapest (£12-15) version of the 2.5Gbs USB adapters. I thought that they have the same Realtek chip and it is just the branding what may differ. I had a wild ride with those cheapo adapters. They randomly disconnected or Linux could not even recognise them ("bad cable").They continuously reset themselves, causing the device disconnecting and appearing again on Linux. Forget about them. This adapter so far just works as I hoped it will. No disconnection issues.Connected them to Synology NAS devices and with the extra driver, they works stable and 2.35Gbs speed or about 250MB/s NFS writer speed are achievable. It works on Linux (Proxmox) and it operates stable. (Not like the cheapo version).Windows works as well, but surprisingly it works worst on Windows than on Linux!I tried this unit on a modern HP laptop and it could achieve an iperf3 test around 1-1.5Gbs. I thought maybe there is some constraints on the shared USB bus. But, on Linux, iperf3 runs on 2.35Gbs. Okay, it is maybe one device, so I tested on others. Similar experience. I tried to update the driver, but no real speed improvement. Luckily Windows was not my main objective.I was not super lucky with OPNsense. The device recognised the adapter and it works with it but it felt like that, even on the switch, the negotiated speed was 2.5Gbs, it may stuck on USB2 speed on my box as the max speed was around 360Mbs. You may be luckier, at least it works and stays stable. After all, I will order these again if I expand my 2.5Gbs network with new devices.

Fooey..

Plugged it into the SteamDeck Docking Station and the SteamDeck recognised it straight away (no drivers needed) and I'm getting transfer rates of 2.35 Gbits/sec. Awesome..I also got one for my laptop and Windows11 also recognised it within about 30 seconds (again without needing drivers), and I'm getting the same 2.35 Gbits/sec transfer speeds. Double Awesome..Final extra awesome note.. I also connected it to my Proxmox server, and again no drivers needed AND it also handles vlan tagging.
