Product introduction

Overview

UGREEN model 60561 is a compact bridge between a computer USB-A port and the combined data-and-power connector on one bare SATA HDD or SSD. It is useful when a drive must be read outside a computer enclosure, files must be moved to a replacement drive, or a technician needs temporary access without installing the disk internally.

The adapter supports 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA drives and is backward-compatible with SATA II and SATA I. Its computer-side connection is USB-A 3.0 with a stated link speed up to 5Gbps. UASP can improve transfer handling when the USB host, operating system and drive all support the protocol; actual file speed remains limited by the slowest part of the system.

Power planning is essential. A normal 2.5-inch SATA drive can be powered through the USB connection, but a 3.5-inch drive requires a separate regulated 12V/2A, centre-positive DC adapter connected to the power input. That power supply is not listed as included, so it must be obtained separately before a 3.5-inch drive can operate.

Connections and roles

Match the drive, host port and power method

Computer side

The fixed lead ends in a USB-A plug. Use a direct USB 3.0 host port when the highest supported link speed is needed.

Drive side

The combined SATA connector mates with the standard data-and-power edge connector on a 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD.

Optional DC input

A 3.5-inch drive needs a separate 12V/2A centre-positive supply. Verify voltage, current rating, polarity and plug fit before connection.

One drive at a time

This is a single-drive adapter, not a multi-bay dock, RAID controller or enclosure. The bare drive remains physically exposed.

Transfer path

USB 3.0 with UASP on compatible systems

The USB 3.0 interface is specified for up to 5Gbps and remains usable on USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 ports at their lower link speeds. UASP reduces storage-command overhead on supporting computers and operating systems, which can help a capable SSD perform more efficiently than with the older bulk-only USB storage path.

Neither 5Gbps nor UASP is a guaranteed file-copy rate. Drive media, file size, USB controller, system load, thermal behaviour and the destination storage all affect real throughput. A mechanical HDD will normally remain limited by its own mechanism.

  • Connect directly to a USB 3.0 port before diagnosing low speed.
  • SMART and TRIM are supported only when the drive, bridge path, operating system and software expose those functions.
  • Safely eject the mounted volume and wait for activity to stop before disconnecting the drive.

Power and idle behaviour

Bus power for 2.5-inch; external power for 3.5-inch

A 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD is intended to run from the USB connection. Desktop-size 3.5-inch drives require both the SATA connection and an external 12V/2A, centre-positive adapter because USB alone cannot supply their required power rails.

UGREEN specifies automatic sleep after roughly three minutes without activity. A sleeping drive may take a moment to wake when accessed again. This behaviour is not a substitute for safely ejecting a mounted file system before unplugging it.

  • Confirm power-adapter polarity and voltage before attaching a 3.5-inch drive.
  • Keep an exposed drive on a stable, dry, non-conductive surface with airflow.
  • Do not move, knock or rotate a mechanical drive while its platters are spinning.

Real-world applications

Use scenarios

Useful for temporary, single-drive access

File recovery and migration

Read a healthy SATA drive removed from another computer and copy needed files to a separate destination.

SSD setup

Connect a replacement SATA SSD for partitioning, formatting or use with separate migration software before installation.

Backup or archive access

Mount a compatible bare SATA drive temporarily when an enclosure is not required for permanent transport.

Workshop diagnostics

Check whether a SATA drive is detected, review supported health information and test file access outside the original machine.

Device and system fit

Compatible devices and systems

For standard SATA HDDs and SSDs—not every storage format

Supported drives

Standard 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs using the combined SATA data-and-power edge connector; SATA III, II and I are supported.

Host systems

Official exact-model material lists Windows, macOS, Linux and Chrome OS. Normal mass-storage use is driverless, subject to the host recognising the disk format.

USB connection

Computers with USB-A. USB 3.0 is preferred; USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 operation is backward-compatible but slower.

Not compatible

M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA modules, IDE/PATA drives, SAS drives and proprietary connectors do not mate with this adapter.

Important limitations

Check before buying

Check these points before ordering or connecting:

  • Inspect the drive label and connector: it must be a standard 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD, not M.2, IDE/PATA or SAS.
  • Confirm that the host computer has USB-A; a USB-C-only computer needs a separate data-capable USB-C adapter.
  • For a 3.5-inch drive, obtain a regulated 12V/2A centre-positive supply with the correct barrel-plug fit. It is not specified as included.
  • Decide whether existing data must be preserved. Initialising, repartitioning or formatting a disk can erase or make existing information inaccessible.
  • Check whether the disk’s existing file system is readable and writable by the intended operating system.
  • Use a second storage destination and suitable software if the goal is cloning; this adapter does not perform a standalone clone.
  • Do not rely on a disputed capacity limit. Confirm unusually large-drive requirements with current UGREEN India support before purchase.

Function scope

What this product does

Use this model for the functions listed below.

  • Connects one standard SATA HDD or SSD to a USB-A host.
  • Supports a USB 3.0 link up to 5Gbps and UASP on compatible systems.
  • Allows normal operating-system storage tasks such as reading, writing, partitioning and formatting when permissions and the file system allow.
  • Supports SMART and TRIM pass-through where the complete host, drive and software path exposes them.
  • Provides automatic sleep after about three minutes of inactivity.

Function boundaries

What this product does not do

These boundaries prevent a connector or headline specification from being mistaken for a different function.

  • It does not accept M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, IDE/PATA, SAS or proprietary drive connectors.
  • It does not power a 3.5-inch drive from USB alone and does not include the required 12V/2A supply.
  • It does not protect the bare drive like a closed enclosure.
  • It does not clone or recover damaged data by itself; those jobs require suitable software and a healthy enough drive.
  • It does not guarantee 5Gbps file transfers, UASP operation, SMART visibility or TRIM on every host.

Setup guidance

Setup and usability guidance

  1. Shut down or safely eject the drive from any previous system and place it on a stable, dry, non-conductive surface.
  2. With the USB plug disconnected, align the adapter with the drive’s SATA data-and-power connector and press it straight on without rocking or forcing.
  3. For a 3.5-inch drive, connect a verified 12V/2A centre-positive power adapter to the DC input; do not substitute an unverified supply.
  4. Connect the USB-A plug directly to the computer, preferably to a USB 3.0 port.
  5. Wait for the operating system to detect the drive. Open disk-management tools only if the drive is new or the existing data is not required.
  6. If an existing disk is not shown, check power, USB port, cable seating and the operating system’s disk utility before accepting any initialise or format prompt.
  7. When finished, close file operations, use the operating system’s safe-eject function, wait for activity to stop, then disconnect USB and external power.

Good practice

Do and avoid

What to do

  • Handle the drive by its edges and protect its exposed circuit board.
  • Use a direct USB 3.0 port and keep backups of important data.
  • Verify voltage, current and centre-positive polarity for a 3.5-inch drive supply.
  • Safely eject before unplugging and wait for a mechanical drive to stop.
  • Investigate unusual noises, repeated disconnects or SMART warnings before writing more data.

What not to do

  • Do not initialise or format a disk that contains files you still need.
  • Do not connect an M.2, IDE/PATA or SAS drive by force.
  • Do not power a 3.5-inch disk from USB alone or use an unknown DC adapter.
  • Do not touch exposed electronics, short contacts or place the drive on metal.
  • Do not move a spinning HDD, pull the cable during activity or treat this open adapter as a protective enclosure.

Safe operation and troubleshooting

Warnings and limitations

Use it safely and troubleshoot methodically

Safety / limitation 1

Formatting, repartitioning, cloning in the wrong direction or accepting an initialise prompt can destroy data. Verify the source and destination before continuing.

Safety / limitation 2

A 3.5-inch drive requires an external 12V/2A centre-positive adapter, which is not included. Incorrect voltage or polarity can damage the drive or adapter.

Safety / limitation 3

The drive remains bare and unprotected from static discharge, liquid, impact and contact with conductive surfaces.

Safety / limitation 4

UASP, SMART and TRIM depend on the complete hardware, operating-system and software path; their support cannot be inferred from the connector alone.

Safety / limitation 5

Official sources conflict on maximum drive capacity, so this description intentionally makes no maximum-capacity promise.

Helpful answers

Product-specific FAQ

Which drives fit UGREEN 60561?

It fits standard 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs with the combined SATA edge connector. It does not fit M.2, IDE/PATA, SAS or proprietary drives.

Can USB power a 2.5-inch drive?

Yes, the exact model is designed to power a normal 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD through USB. A weak hub or port can still cause unstable operation, so connect directly if needed.

What power does a 3.5-inch drive need?

Use a separate regulated 12V/2A, centre-positive DC adapter with the correct plug fit. That supply is required for 3.5-inch drives and is not included.

Does it support UASP?

Yes. UASP works only when the host USB controller and operating system also support it. Actual speed remains limited by the drive, port and workload.

Will transfers reach 5Gbps?

5Gbps is the maximum USB 3.0 link rate, not a guaranteed file-copy result. Drive speed, files, host controller and destination storage all affect throughput.

Does it work on a USB 2.0 port?

Yes, it is backward-compatible, but the link will run at the lower USB 2.0 speed and may provide less robust power for some bus-powered drives.

Why is a connected disk not visible?

Check connector seating, direct USB connection and—on a 3.5-inch drive—the external supply. Then inspect the system disk utility; do not initialise or format a disk containing needed data.

Can this adapter clone a drive without a computer?

No. It connects one drive to a host. Cloning requires a computer, appropriate software and a separate source or destination drive.

Does it support SMART and TRIM?

The adapter supports them, but visibility depends on the drive, operating system, USB-storage stack and application. Not every tool exposes the same information through USB.

Why does the drive pause after being idle?

UGREEN specifies automatic sleep after roughly three minutes without activity. Accessing the disk again may require a short wake-up delay.

What is included?

One UGREEN 60561 adapter with an integrated 0.5m USB-A cable is identified. The 12V/2A supply needed for a 3.5-inch drive is not included.
