UGREEN 30715 PCIe 4.0 x4 to M.2 NVMe Adapter

An internal desktop expansion card that connects one compatible M.2 PCIe NVMe/AHCI SSD to a motherboard PCIe slot. The edge connector is physically x16 length but the card uses a PCIe x4 electrical link, fitting suitable full-height x4, x8 or x16 slots.

Check first: This card supports M.2 PCIe drives, not M.2 SATA/NGFF or mSATA. It installs inside a desktop PCIe slot and is not a USB or Thunderbolt external enclosure.

Product overview

Overview

UGREEN 30715 is a passive-style PCIe adapter path with thermal hardware for one M.2 PCIe SSD. The motherboard supplies the PCIe lanes and system power; the card does not translate a SATA drive or create an external USB connection.

The slot edge is x16-size for mechanical stability and broad slot fit, while the electrical connection uses four PCIe lanes. With PCIe 4.0 x4 throughout, the interface ceiling is 64Gbps theoretical. Older PCIe 3.0, 2.0 or 1.0 systems can negotiate their lower generation if firmware and hardware support the SSD.

The exact set includes a heatsink, metal thermal-conductive plate/pad arrangement, silicone thermal pads, screws and screwdriver. Cooling effectiveness depends on correct pad contact, case airflow and SSD workload; the heatsink cannot prevent every controller from thermal throttling.

Verified highlights

Key features

  • One PCIe M.2 drive: accepts a compatible NVMe or AHCI PCIe SSD, not a SATA M.2 device.
  • Physical/electrical distinction: x16-length card edge with an x4 electrical data path.
  • Broad slot fit: installs in a full-height desktop PCIe x4, x8 or x16 slot with at least four usable lanes.
  • PCIe 4.0 x4 ceiling: up to 64Gbps theoretical when motherboard slot, CPU/chipset and SSD all support Gen 4 x4.
  • Four SSD lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 mounting positions.
  • Thermal assembly: heatsink and supplied thermal interface pieces spread heat from the M.2 components.
  • Activity indicator: onboard LED provides storage-activity feedback but not drive-health diagnosis.
  • No SATA cable: the installed drive communicates directly over motherboard PCIe lanes.

Know the exact connector roles

PCIe slot, lane and M.2 protocol map

Three separate checks matter: the case/slot must physically fit the full-height card, the slot must expose usable PCIe lanes, and the M.2 drive must use PCIe rather than SATA.

  • PCIe x16-size edge: the long physical connector fits an open-ended x4 or conventional x4/x8/x16 slot with suitable clearance.
  • PCIe x4 electrical link: only four lanes carry data; placing the card in an x16 slot does not make it an x16-bandwidth device.
  • M.2 M-key / compatible B+M-key socket: accepts PCIe NVMe/AHCI SSDs in the supported sizes.
  • 2230/2242/2260/2280 fixing points: secure the far end of the corresponding drive length with the correct supplied hardware.
  • Heatsink stack: thermal pad surfaces must make even contact while avoiding the M.2 edge connector.
  • Activity LED: reflects I/O state according to the card/drive but cannot indicate safe removal or remaining cached writes.
  • Motherboard resource path: CPU/chipset lane sharing, slot disabling and generation are controlled by the motherboard manual and firmware.

Where it makes sense

Use scenarios

Choose the card to add one PCIe M.2 SSD to a desktop that has an available compatible slot but lacks a free onboard M.2 socket.

  • Add a high-speed data/project SSD to a desktop with an unused PCIe x4, x8 or x16 slot.
  • Reuse a compatible 2230–2280 PCIe M.2 SSD in a workstation after confirming protocol and motherboard support.
  • Move scratch files, games or media libraries to a dedicated drive while retaining the motherboard’s onboard M.2 sockets for other devices.
  • Run drive diagnostics or cloning software with the SSD installed as a standard PCIe storage device, subject to OS/driver recognition.
  • Use a PCIe 4.0 SSD at the slot’s supported generation, understanding that chipset-connected slots and shared lanes may reduce bandwidth.
  • Not for a laptop, external Thunderbolt chassis unless that chassis independently supports full-height PCIe cards, or any USB-only device.

A dependable first connection

Setup and usability guidance

Internal installation exposes the computer and SSD to static and mechanical risk. Shut down fully and follow the motherboard/case manuals.

  1. Confirm the SSD is PCIe NVMe/AHCI, not M.2 SATA, and identify its 2230/2242/2260/2280 length.
  2. Read the motherboard manual for slot size, electrical lane count, lane sharing and whether populating the slot disables other ports.
  3. Shut down, switch off and unplug the computer; discharge residual power and use appropriate antistatic precautions.
  4. Install the SSD into the card’s M.2 socket at an angle, lower it to the correct mounting point and secure it without overtightening.
  5. Place the correct thermal pads and heatsink so they contact the SSD components evenly; remove only the intended protective films.
  6. Remove the matching full-height case bracket cover, insert the card straight into the PCIe slot and secure its bracket screw.
  7. Close the case, restore power and check BIOS/UEFI and the operating-system disk utility. Do not initialise a drive containing needed data.
  8. After recognition, monitor temperature and stability under sustained load and improve case airflow if the SSD throttles.

Match the whole chain

Compatible devices and systems

The adapter has no independent controller that can override motherboard firmware. The motherboard, CPU/chipset, operating system and SSD must all support the intended use.

  • M.2 PCIe NVMe or AHCI SSDs with M-key or compatible B+M-key interface.
  • Supported 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 M.2 card lengths.
  • Desktop motherboards with an available full-height PCIe x4, x8 or x16 slot exposing at least an x4 electrical path.
  • PCIe 4.0 systems up to x4 speed, and PCIe 3.0/2.0/1.0 systems at their mutually negotiated lower generation.
  • Windows, Linux, macOS or other systems only when their firmware, storage driver and platform can enumerate the chosen NVMe/AHCI device.
  • Boot use only where BIOS/UEFI explicitly supports booting from an NVMe device installed in that PCIe slot.
  • Full-height desktop cases with sufficient card, heatsink and neighboring-slot clearance.

Operating-system examples still require compatible motherboard firmware, storage driver and SSD support.

Capabilities

What this product does

  • Routes one compatible M.2 PCIe SSD through four motherboard PCIe lanes.
  • Fits suitable desktop PCIe x4, x8 and x16 slots while remaining an x4 electrical device.
  • Supports up to PCIe 4.0 x4 theoretical bandwidth when every link component supports it.
  • Secures 2230, 2242, 2260 or 2280 M.2 drive lengths with the appropriate mounting point.
  • Adds a heatsink and thermal interface path to spread SSD heat into case airflow.
  • Presents the SSD to firmware and the operating system as a PCIe storage device.

Clear boundaries

What this product does not do

  • It does not accept M.2 SATA/NGFF, B-key SATA, mSATA, 2.5-inch SATA or SAS drives.
  • It does not provide USB-C, Thunderbolt, USB-A or an external enclosure connection.
  • It does not use sixteen electrical lanes or make an x4 SSD faster when installed in an x16 slot.
  • It does not include an SSD or create RAID; one drive is installed.
  • It does not guarantee boot support, because BIOS/UEFI and motherboard routing determine that capability.
  • It does not guarantee hot plug/hot removal. Treat it as an internal device and power down before changes.
  • It does not bypass motherboard lane sharing, disabled slots, chipset bottlenecks, drivers or operating-system limits.
UGREEN 30715 supported PCIe M.2 and excluded SATA M.2 drive keys
Use a PCIe NVMe/AHCI M.2 drive; a physically similar M.2 SATA device is not supported.

Good practice

What to do

  • Read the motherboard manual for physical slot fit, lane availability and shared-resource rules.
  • Verify PCIe/NVMe protocol on the SSD label rather than relying on M.2 size or notch appearance.
  • Power down, unplug and use antistatic handling before touching the card or drive.
  • Use the supplied mounting and thermal hardware, remove protective films and keep even pad contact.
  • Secure both the M.2 drive and case bracket without overtightening, then provide case airflow.
  • Back up the drive before partitioning, formatting, cloning or changing storage configuration.

Avoid these mistakes

What not to do

  • Do not insert an M.2 SATA device or force a mismatched key into the socket.
  • Do not install or remove the card while the computer has mains or standby power.
  • Do not assume a long x16 edge means x16 electrical bandwidth or that every x16 slot has four available lanes.
  • Do not omit thermal pads for sustained use, stack incorrect pad thicknesses or allow the heatsink to short components.
  • Do not initialise a recognised disk until you have confirmed whether it contains needed data.
  • Do not attempt live internal hot swapping or remove the SSD while the adapter is installed and powered.

Important safety and performance notes

Warnings and limitations

PCIe configuration differs widely by motherboard. Populating one slot can reduce graphics lanes, disable SATA ports or share chipset bandwidth.

  • The x16-size connector is electrically x4; motherboard slot labels and manuals are the authoritative lane-resource guide.
  • PCIe 4.0 x4 64Gbps is a signaling ceiling. SSD controller, NAND, thermals, chipset link and workload determine real transfer speed.
  • An unsupported boot configuration may still work as a data drive after the operating system loads; boot support is separate from detection.
  • Heatsinks become warm. Ensure case airflow and avoid touching the assembly immediately after sustained transfers.
  • Incorrect thermal-pad placement or forgotten protective film can worsen cooling; metal parts must never contact exposed circuitry improperly.
  • Older operating systems may require storage drivers. Exact current OS and firmware support must be checked for the motherboard and SSD.
  • Keep all screws controlled inside the case. A loose screw can short the motherboard or expansion card.

Correct pad contact and case airflow are essential; the heatsink cannot eliminate all SSD thermal throttling.

Keep it working and solve common issues

Care, troubleshooting and buying checklist

Diagnose from hardware identity outward: SSD protocol, card seating, slot resources, firmware visibility, driver and disk state.

  • Not visible in BIOS/OS: confirm PCIe protocol, reseat the SSD and card, try a known compatible slot and check lane-sharing settings.
  • Visible but no drive letter: inspect the disk utility for an offline, uninitialised, unmounted or unsupported-filesystem volume.
  • Runs at a lower generation: check slot generation, CPU/chipset routing, BIOS link settings and whether the SSD itself is Gen 3 or older.
  • System will not boot from it: verify UEFI/NVMe boot support, installation mode and bootloader configuration; data-drive detection does not prove bootability.
  • Thermal throttling: inspect pad contact, remove protective film, improve case airflow and confirm the heatsink is properly secured.
  • Other ports disappeared: consult the motherboard lane-sharing table; moving the card to another slot may restore shared resources.
  • Buying check: confirm PCIe M.2 protocol, supported card length, full-height case space and a slot with four usable lanes.

Product-specific FAQ

Does it support M.2 SATA SSDs?
No. It is for M.2 PCIe NVMe/AHCI drives. M.2 SATA/NGFF needs a different adapter.
Why is the connector x16-size if the card is x4?
The edge is physically long, but only four PCIe lanes are used electrically. It remains an x4-bandwidth device.
Can it fit an x8 or x16 slot?
Yes, in a compatible full-height slot with suitable clearance and at least four usable PCIe lanes.
Which M.2 lengths fit?
2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 PCIe M.2 SSDs are supported.
What is the maximum interface speed?
PCIe 4.0 x4 has a 64Gbps theoretical signaling ceiling; actual SSD transfer is lower and system-dependent.
Does it need a SATA data or power cable?
No. Data and power are supplied through the motherboard PCIe slot.
Is an SSD included?
No. The package contains the adapter, thermal/mounting hardware, screwdriver and manual.
Can I boot from the installed SSD?
Only if the motherboard BIOS/UEFI and operating-system configuration support NVMe boot from that slot. It is not guaranteed.
Does it support hot swapping?
No hot-swap promise is made. Shut down, unplug and discharge the computer before installing or changing the drive.
Does it create RAID?
No. The card accepts one SSD. Any system-level storage arrangement depends on separate motherboard/software capability.
Will it work in a laptop or USB-C port?
No. It is a full-height internal desktop PCIe card, not an external USB/Thunderbolt enclosure.
Why did another motherboard port stop working?
PCIe slots often share chipset or CPU resources with M.2 or SATA ports. Check the motherboard lane-sharing table and try an alternative slot.
