The cable can transport digital audio when the source sends it and the display exposes speakers or an audio output. Audio format, channel count and volume remain endpoint-controlled.

What the entire connection must support
Both devices need full-size DisplayPort. A USB-C port works only through a separately verified USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter or cable in the correct direction and with DisplayPort Alt Mode.
The source GPU and display must support the chosen timing. Colour depth, chroma, multiple displays and adapters can consume bandwidth or introduce a lower ceiling.
MST multi-display capability belongs to the DisplayPort source and downstream hub/display topology. A single passive cable cannot split one port into independent screens by itself.
HDCP-protected content requires support across source, display and any active intermediate device. This passive cable neither creates nor bypasses content protection.
