Key features

Exact storage role

turns one 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA HDD/SSD into powered USB-A external storage for desktop, archive and media-library use.

Supported drive

One 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA I/II/III HDD/SSD, up to 26mm drive thickness.

Connection path

Detachable 1m USB 3.0 Type-A to Type-B cable; internal SATA I/II/III, 7+15-pin.

Thermal and controller design

Black ABS case with shock-cushioning strip and bottom ventilation openings; ASM1153E, shown in exact live artwork.

Understand the complete storage path

1. The drive

One 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA I/II/III HDD/SSD, up to 26mm drive thickness.

2. Internal bus

SATA I/II/III, 7+15-pin. This is the protocol used between the installed drive and bridge.

3. Enclosure bridge

ASM1153E, shown in exact live artwork. The bridge translates the drive protocol to USB mass storage.

4. Host connection

Detachable 1m USB 3.0 Type-A to Type-B cable. The host port, cable and any hub must support the required data mode.

Do not shop by shape alone: not for IDE/PATA, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe or mSATA; not a multi-bay RAID, dock or offline cloning station. An M.2 notch does not by itself identify SATA versus NVMe, and a USB-C connector does not guarantee USB4 or 10Gbps.

Drive compatibility: form factor, key and capacity

Compatible: One 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA I/II/III HDD/SSD, up to 26mm drive thickness.

Not compatible: not for IDE/PATA, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe or mSATA; not a multi-bay RAID, dock or offline cloning station.

Capacity guidance: Up to 16TB, stated by the exact source and exact live gallery.

Brand examples are not enough: the same SSD brand can sell SATA and NVMe products under similar names. Check the exact model’s protocol, dimensions, key and any pre-installed heatsink before purchase.

Performance reality: link rate versus file speed

USB 3.0 is the 5Gbps theoretical link ceiling, below SATA III’s 6Gbps bus ceiling. Mechanical HDDs are normally much slower than either ceiling; actual throughput depends on drive, workload, host and UASP.

  • Large sequential files usually transfer faster than folders containing thousands of small files.
  • HDD mechanics, SSD cache exhaustion, encryption, antivirus scanning and thermal throttling can dominate the result.
  • UASP, TRIM and S.M.A.R.T. require compatible drive, bridge, host controller, operating system and software; a feature label does not force every host to expose it.
  • Backward compatibility means operation at the slower negotiated link; it does not preserve the headline speed.

Use scenarios

Desktop archive drive

Reuse a large 3.5-inch SATA HDD for media, backups or cold archives with the supplied power adapter.

Old-PC drive access

Read a removed 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drive without mounting it internally in another desktop.

Media library

Attach supported storage to a computer, TV or router only after confirming its file-system and capacity rules.

Backups and archives

Build a scheduled backup target, then keep a second independent copy. An enclosure is storage hardware, not a complete backup strategy.

Drive inspection

Read a removed drive on another computer when the drive is electrically healthy, unlocked and formatted in a file system the host understands.

Setup and usability guidance

  1. Step 1: Disconnect power and USB. Confirm the bare drive is the supported SATA form factor and has no protruding rails, caddy or adapter attached.
  2. Step 2: Open the enclosure, align the drive’s 7+15-pin SATA connector and slide it straight into the socket. Never rock or force the thin plastic tongue.
  3. Step 3: Fit the supplied EVA spacer for a thinner 7mm drive when applicable, then close the housing without trapping the cable or pressing on the drive.
  4. Step 4: Connect the supplied 12V/2A adapter and USB cable, then use the enclosure power button. Do not substitute an unverified power supply.
  5. Step 5: If the drive is new, open the operating system’s disk utility, verify the correct disk by capacity/model, then initialise, partition and format it. Formatting erases data.
  6. Step 6: If the drive already contains data, do not initialise or format it merely because the host prompts you. First check encryption, file system, health and the original machine.
  7. Step 7: Before disconnecting, finish all transfers, eject or safely remove the volume in the operating system, wait for activity to stop and then unplug or switch off.

Critical distinction: “Not visible in File Explorer/Finder” does not automatically mean hardware failure. A blank, offline, encrypted, unsupported or unmounted disk can appear only in the system disk utility.

Migration, cloning and data-recovery planning

Before migration

Back up irreplaceable files separately. Record encryption/recovery keys and confirm source and target health before changing partitions.

Cloning is software-driven

This enclosure exposes one drive; it has no verified standalone clone button. Use trusted software and verify the copy before erasing the original.

Booting is not guaranteed

External boot depends on the computer firmware, operating system, security policy, partition scheme and licensing—not just the enclosure.

Recovery has limits

An enclosure cannot repair failed heads, damaged NAND, controller faults, corrupted encryption or severe file-system damage. Repeated retries can worsen a failing drive.

Compatible devices and systems

Listed/verified class: Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS; exact media also illustrates TV, router, PlayStation and Xbox uses subject to their own storage rules.

Computers

Most modern systems support USB mass storage, but file-system write support differs across Windows, macOS and Linux.

Phones and tablets

A matching connector is insufficient: the mobile host must support USB OTG/mass storage, the chosen file system and the enclosure’s power demand.

TVs, routers and consoles

Check the device manual for USB generation, file system, partition table, maximum capacity and whether formatting is mandatory.

Hubs and adapters

An extra hub or converter can reduce speed or power stability. Test directly on the host before diagnosing the enclosure.

What this product does

  • Turns one 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA HDD/SSD into powered USB-A external storage for desktop, archive and media-library use.
  • Provides the verified path: SATA I/II/III, 7+15-pin to Detachable 1m USB 3.0 Type-A to Type-B cable.
  • Supports the exact drive boundary: One 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA I/II/III HDD/SSD, up to 26mm drive thickness.
  • Uses Black ABS case with shock-cushioning strip and bottom ventilation openings and ASM1153E, shown in exact live artwork.
  • Exposes the drive to a compatible host for normal file access, formatting, backup, migration or supported cloning software.

What this product does not do

  • Not for IDE/PATA, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe or mSATA; not a multi-bay RAID, dock or offline cloning station.
  • It does not include an SSD/HDD or add capacity by itself.
  • It does not guarantee the theoretical link rate as sustained file throughput.
  • It does not bypass passwords, BitLocker/FileVault encryption, permissions or unsupported file systems.
  • It does not repair a failing drive, replace a backup, provide RAID or perform unattended offline cloning.
  • It does not make a host support capacities, formats or game-install rules that the host manufacturer excludes.

What to do

Verify the exact drive

Read the drive label/data sheet for protocol, physical size, key and thickness before opening the enclosure.

Use the supplied path

Start with Detachable 1m USB 3.0 Type-A to Type-B cable. Connect directly to a known-good host data port.

Protect the thermal path

Install pads as directed, keep vents clear and allow airflow during sustained transfers.

Eject and keep backups

Safely remove before unplugging and maintain at least one independent copy of important data.

What not to do

Do not force connectors

Misaligned SATA or M.2 connectors can be damaged by surprisingly little force. Recheck orientation and protocol.

Do not format blindly

If a host asks to initialise or erase an existing drive, stop until you know why and have a verified backup.

Do not unplug during activity

Removing USB or power during writes can corrupt files, file systems or the drive translation layer.

Do not block cooling

Do not wrap, stack or operate on soft insulating surfaces during sustained transfer.

Warnings and limitations

Data first: an enclosure can expose a drive; it cannot guarantee the integrity of the data already on it. Keep independent backups before migration, repartitioning or firmware work.

Power: use the supplied 12V/2A adapter, place it where it can ventilate and do not substitute a different voltage/polarity unit.

Heat: warmth can be normal, especially with NVMe. Stop use for smoke, burning smell, deformation, liquid ingress, repeated drop-outs or abnormal mechanical HDD sounds.

Handling: protect bare drives from electrostatic discharge; hold an SSD by its edges, avoid touching gold contacts and never move a spinning 3.5-inch HDD roughly.

Removal: wait for all writes, eject in the OS, allow the activity indicator to settle, then disconnect. Auto-sleep is not a substitute for safe removal.

Troubleshooting guide

No device at all

Disconnect, power down, reseat the drive and retest with the supplied cable directly on another known-good host data port. Verify the drive protocol and orientation.

Enclosure detected, no volume

Open Disk Management/Disk Utility. A new disk may need initialisation; an old disk may be offline, encrypted or use an unsupported file system. Do not erase valuable data.

Slower than expected

Confirm negotiated USB mode, remove slow hubs, use the supplied cable, test a large file and check SSD/HDD health, cache and temperature. Link rate is not file speed.

Disconnects under load

Check cable seating, direct-port power, thermal-pad placement and airflow. For SKU 50422, use the supplied 12V/2A adapter. Stop if the drive reports health errors.

Read-only or permission errors

Check write protection, ownership, encryption and file-system support. macOS and Windows do not natively write every file system used by the other.

Console/TV asks to format

That host may require its own partition and file system. Formatting erases the drive; move needed data elsewhere first and review the host manual.

Product-specific FAQ

What is UGREEN 50422 made to do?
Turns one 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA HDD/SSD into powered USB-A external storage for desktop, archive and media-library use. It is an enclosure/bridge, not a drive; storage media is not included.
Which drives fit?
One 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA I/II/III HDD/SSD, up to 26mm drive thickness. Not for IDE/PATA, M.2 SATA, M.2 NVMe or mSATA; not a multi-bay RAID, dock or offline cloning station.
Does it support both SATA and NVMe?
No NVMe or M.2 drive fits this enclosure. It is for the stated 2.5/3.5-inch SATA drive format only.
What is the real maximum speed?
USB 3.0 is the 5Gbps theoretical link ceiling, below SATA III’s 6Gbps bus ceiling. Mechanical HDDs are normally much slower than either ceiling; actual throughput depends on drive, workload, host and UASP. Link-rate labels are theoretical and should not be read as a guaranteed benchmark.
What capacity is supported?
Up to 16TB, stated by the exact source and exact live gallery. Capacity support does not guarantee that every TV, router, console or old operating system can address or format the same size.
Will a new drive appear immediately?
The enclosure can be detected while a blank drive still has no volume. Use the correct disk utility to initialise, partition and format a new drive. Double-check the disk identity because formatting destroys existing data.
Can it clone or migrate my system?
It provides external access to the installed drive but does not perform standalone cloning. Use reliable cloning/backup software, confirm the target has sufficient usable capacity, keep the original untouched until verification and handle encrypted/boot volumes according to the OS vendor’s guidance.
Can I use it with a console, TV or router?
Possibly: Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS; exact media also illustrates TV, router, PlayStation and Xbox uses subject to their own storage rules. The host may require a specific file system, partition scheme, capacity, power budget or dedicated “extended storage” format. Those rules can erase the drive and are controlled by the host, not by the enclosure.
Why is the drive not detected?
Power down and reseat the drive, confirm its protocol/form factor, try the supplied cable directly on another suitable host port, and inspect Disk Management/Disk Utility rather than only the file browser. Do not format an unknown drive with valuable data.
Is warmth normal, and how should I disconnect?
A drive and enclosure can become warm in long transfers. Keep ventilation clear, do not cover the housing, and stop for abnormal smell/noise or repeated disconnects. Always eject the volume and wait for activity to stop before unplugging.
What is included?
1 × UGREEN 50422 enclosure, 1 × 1m USB 3.0 A-to-B cable, 1 × 12V/2A power adapter, 1 × user guide; drive is not included.
