What are Hubs?

Hubs are basic networking devices that connect multiple computers and devices within a local area network (LAN). They allow data to flow between these devices by receiving data packets and broadcasting them to all connected systems. However, a hub does not filter data; it sends incoming data to all ports. Because of this, hubs can create unnecessary network traffic, which may lead to slower performance.

The Role of Hubs in Communication

Hubs serve as a central point of communication in a network. They help devices share information with each other, but they do not provide any intelligence in managing data. When a device sends data, the hub sends that data to every other device connected to it. This simplicity makes hubs easy to set up and use, but it can also cause security issues since data is shared widely among devices.

Hubs vs. Switches: What’s the Difference?

While hubs connect multiple devices, switches are more advanced and efficient. Switches can identify which device needs the data and send it only to that device, reducing unnecessary traffic. So, while hubs are simpler and cheaper, they have limitations that can affect network performance, especially in larger setups. Because of this, switches have largely replaced hubs in modern networks.
