Overview

UGREEN HD178 model 45505 is a 20-metre active optical HDMI cable for long one-way runs from an HDMI source to an HDMI display. It combines optical transmission with active electronics in the connectors, supports HDMI 2.0 bandwidth up to 18Gbps and is specified for video up to 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60Hz. The ends are directional: connect the plug marked Source/Input to the player or computer and Display/Output to the television, monitor or projector.

Best-fit useRoute a computer or presentation switcher to a projector across a meeting room or lecture hall.
Check firstActive optical HDMI cables contain electronics and a fibre core; physical damage may not be repairable.

Key benefits and features

These capabilities apply to the exact UGREEN SKU and remain conditional on the connected equipment described below.

  • Twenty-metre active optical construction is intended for installations where an ordinary short copper HDMI cable is impractical.
  • Up to 18Gbps and 4K60 support for compatible HDMI 2.0 sources, displays and content.
  • Optical signal path is resistant to EMI/RFI, useful in conference rooms, auditoriums, showrooms and equipment-heavy spaces.
  • Gold-plated contacts and alloy connector shells protect the active termination points.
  • Powered through the HDMI connection; no separate external power adapter is specified.

Plan the 20-metre AOC installation before routing

Active optical HDMI solves a distance problem but introduces fixed direction and careful-handling requirements. Complete the checks below while both connector ends remain accessible.

Direction

Connect the plug marked Source to the player, computer or AV output and the plug marked Display to the television, monitor or projector. Reversing them produces no image.

Pre-installation test

Connect the actual source and display, select 4K60/HDR if required and verify stable picture and audio before pulling the cable through a wall, ceiling or conduit.

Mechanical protection

Do not cut, re-terminate, kink, crush or pull by the connector. Use a generous bend radius and protect the connector heads while routing the 20m hybrid optical cable.

Complete HDMI chain

Every receiver, switch, coupler and display port must support the required HDMI 2.0, 18Gbps and HDCP 2.2 mode. Extra passive joints can reduce installation reliability.

Use scenarios

Use scenario 1

Route a computer or presentation switcher to a projector across a meeting room or lecture hall.

Use scenario 2

Connect a media player or AV receiver to a distant television in a home-theatre installation.

Use scenario 3

Carry HDMI through a showroom, stage or control-room pathway where electrical interference is a concern.

Use scenario 4

Pre-wire a long fixed route before mounting the display, after testing the complete system at the required format.

Setup and usability guidance

1

Uncoil the cable fully and identify the Source/Input and Display/Output labels before routing it.

2

Connect Source/Input to the HDMI output of the computer, console, player or receiver; connect Display/Output to the television, monitor or projector.

3

Test picture and audio at the required resolution before concealing the cable or closing walls/ceilings.

4

Route with wide, relaxed bends, protect the connector bodies and avoid pulling force on the active ends.

5

Select the correct display input. If no signal appears, verify direction first, then test 1080p before moving to 4K60.

Compatible devices and systems

Compatible with full-size HDMI sources and displays whose ports support the chosen format. Typical sources include PCs, laptops with HDMI, media players, consoles and AV equipment; receivers include TVs, monitors, LED displays and projectors. 4K60, HDR, HDCP and multichannel audio require a compatible source, display, content and any device placed in the chain. This is an HDMI link, not a generic fibre-network cable.

What this product does

  • Carries one HDMI audio/video signal 20 metres in the labelled Source-to-Display direction.
  • Supports HDMI 2.0-class formats up to the stated 18Gbps/4K60 maximum.
  • Reduces susceptibility to surrounding electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference.

What this product does not do

  • It does not work in reverse if Source and Display ends are swapped.
  • It does not split one source to several displays, switch inputs, scale resolution or capture video.
  • It is not specified for HDMI 2.1 modes such as 8K60 or 4K120.
  • It cannot be cut, spliced or terminated like passive copper cable or network fibre.

What to do

  • Test the cable end-to-end before permanent installation.
  • Follow the connector direction labels and allow service slack at both endpoints.
  • Use conduit and bend radii large enough for the connector and optical core.
  • Support the cable so its weight does not hang from the HDMI socket.

What not to do

  • Do not kink, crush, staple, tightly coil or pull the cable by an HDMI plug.
  • Do not install it backwards or assume it is bidirectional.
  • Do not exceed the source/display format capabilities or promise HDMI 2.1 performance.
  • Do not close an inaccessible route until 4K60 and audio have been tested.

Warnings and limitations

Limitation 1

Active optical HDMI cables contain electronics and a fibre core; physical damage may not be repairable.

Limitation 2

Actual maximum format depends on the complete HDMI chain. Long-route performance should be tested with the intended equipment.

Limitation 3

Protect connectors from dust, moisture, excessive heat and construction debris.

Limitation 4

For in-wall use, confirm the cable and installation method meet the building and fire rules applicable to the site.

Product-specific FAQ

Is this cable directional?

Yes. Connect Source/Input to the transmitting device and Display/Output to the screen. Reversed installation will not produce a signal.

Can it carry 4K at 60Hz over 20m?

That is the stated maximum at up to 18Gbps, provided every device and the content path supports 4K60.

Does it need a separate power adapter?

No external power supply is specified; the active electronics draw operating power through HDMI.

Can I use it for 8K or 4K120?

No. Those are HDMI 2.1-class modes and are outside this HDMI 2.0/18Gbps model’s specification.

Can it be cut and re-terminated?

No. It is a factory-terminated active optical assembly and should not be cut or spliced.

What should I test before installing it in a wall?

Verify direction, picture, sound, HDCP playback and the intended resolution/refresh rate using the actual source and display.

Why do I get no signal?

Check that the labelled ends are correct, reseat both plugs, select the right input and test a lower video mode. Then bypass intermediate equipment.

Can it connect two monitors?

No. It carries one source-to-one-display HDMI link. A suitable splitter or matrix is required for multiple displays.

How should it be routed?

Use gentle bends, no crushing or staples, adequate connector clearance and strain support at each HDMI port.

Can I add a coupler or wall plate to the 20m run?

It may add loss and another compatibility point. For the most reliable high-bandwidth installation, use the AOC end to end and test any required coupler or wall plate before concealment.
