Key features
02 · At a glance
Up to 1Gbps link. The RJ45 link-rate ceiling is 1Gbps. Real file-copy and internet results are lower because of framing, transport overhead, storage, CPU, router and service limits.
AX88179A. Use a USB-C port that supports host USB data or OTG Ethernet, not merely charging.
USB-C host. RJ45 negotiation supports 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1Gbps Ethernet link modes.
No PoE or PD. The manual lists native driver operation on Windows 11/10/8.1/8, macOS, iPadOS, ChromeOS and Android.
Every interface and indicator explained
03 · Connector clarity
USB-C host plug. Connects to a host USB data/OTG port. The USB-C shape alone does not guarantee that a phone, tablet or console exposes Ethernet.
RJ45 Ethernet socket. Auto-negotiates 10/100/1000Mbps with a compatible router, switch, modem or wall link.
Network status LED. Shows link/activity state. Check the host network panel for the negotiated speed because the LED is not a precise rate display.
Braided integrated cable. Provides a flexible host connection; avoid tight folds, pulling or lifting the host by the lead.
Aluminium enclosure. Helps distribute controller heat and should remain uncovered during sustained traffic.
Link-rate ceilings and real throughput
04 · Performance planning
The RJ45 link-rate ceiling is 1Gbps. Real file-copy and internet results are lower because of framing, transport overhead, storage, CPU, router and service limits.
The adapter negotiates down to 100Mbps or 10Mbps when the network device, cable or intermediate path cannot establish Gigabit.
The host USB-C port must carry sufficient USB data. A charge-only USB-C connection cannot operate an Ethernet adapter.
Gigabit requires four intact cable pairs and Gigabit-capable endpoints. A two-pair or damaged cable commonly produces a 100Mbps link.
The adapter can improve connection consistency relative to congested Wi-Fi, but it cannot reduce every source of application latency or exceed the broadband plan.
What the host, cable or radio route must support
05 · Complete path
Use a USB-C port that supports host USB data or OTG Ethernet, not merely charging.
Use a Cat5e-or-better four-pair Ethernet cable and a Gigabit-capable router/switch port for a 1Gbps link.
Use an operating system that either includes AX88179A support or can install the matching driver.
For Nintendo Switch, keep system software current and connect through a compatible USB-C/USB host arrangement.
Verify the negotiated rate in network settings, then isolate internet limits with a local-network transfer if required.
Standards, negotiation and operating roles
06 · Network behaviour
RJ45 negotiation supports 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1Gbps Ethernet link modes.
Controller: ASIX AX88179A.
The adapter creates one standard network interface and normally receives IP, gateway and DNS settings from the connected router.
The USB-C plug carries host data and bus power for the adapter only; it does not expose charging, video or USB pass-through.
The RJ45 socket provides data only. It does not inject or extract IEEE PoE or passive power.
Ceiling, not a promise
A port, radio or USB label is a signalling ceiling. Real performance depends on the complete path, protocol overhead, local conditions and the devices at both ends.
Compatible devices and systems
07 · Device fit
Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 8. The manual lists native driver operation on these systems, subject to their current update and security state.
macOS and iPadOS. Listed for native operation; the device and OS release must expose USB Ethernet.
ChromeOS and Android. Listed for native operation, but a particular Chromebook, phone or tablet must support USB host/OTG networking.
Windows 7 / XP / Vista. The manual requires a matching AX88179A driver; these legacy systems have significant security limitations.
Linux. The manual requires a driver. Kernel, distribution, architecture and Secure Boot determine installation success.
Nintendo Switch. Listed as compatible with current system software; real network ceiling also follows the console and connection mode.
Use scenarios
08 · Practical value
Laptop wired networking. Add a Gigabit-capable RJ45 interface to a supported USB-C notebook without built-in Ethernet.
USB-C tablet Ethernet. Use a wired network where the tablet OS exposes USB host Ethernet.
Nintendo Switch wired link. Connect a supported, updated console setup to a router or switch through Ethernet.
Wi-Fi troubleshooting. Compare a wired path against the wireless connection to isolate radio interference or coverage issues.
Setup and usability guidance
09 · Usability
Confirm CM483 / SKU 40322 and check the target operating system's driver requirement.
Connect the USB-C plug directly to a host data/OTG port.
Connect a known-good Cat5e-or-better cable between the adapter and a router, switch, modem or wall link.
Wait for the Ethernet interface to appear; install the AX88179A driver when the manual requires it.
Confirm IP address, gateway and negotiated link rate in the operating system.
Test with a local Gigabit endpoint before attributing a slow broadband result to the adapter.
Driver and operating-system guidance
10 · Software
The manual lists native driver operation on Windows 11/10/8.1/8, macOS, iPadOS, ChromeOS and Android.
Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Linux require a matching driver according to the manual.
Native-driver wording is not a guarantee that every future OS release or every Android device exposes USB Ethernet.
Linux support depends on kernel, distribution, CPU architecture and module-signing policy.
Nintendo Switch needs current system software and a compatible connection mode.
Avoid installing software for a similar-looking UGREEN Ethernet adapter that uses a different controller.
Driver discipline
Match this SKU, chipset, operating-system version and CPU architecture. A driver for a similar enclosure can be incompatible with the hardware inside.
What this product does
11 · scope
Adds one auto-negotiating 10/100/1000Mbps RJ45 interface to a compatible USB-C host.
Uses the documented AX88179A controller, braided lead and aluminium body.
Works natively on the manual's listed modern Windows, Apple, ChromeOS and Android environments when the device exposes USB Ethernet.
Can be used with an updated compatible Nintendo Switch setup.
What this product does not do
12 · Clear boundaries
It does not provide 2.5GbE, 5GbE or 10GbE; its Ethernet ceiling is 1Gbps.
It does not charge the host, accept USB-C PD, output video or provide USB pass-through.
It does not supply or receive PoE through RJ45.
It cannot add USB host/OTG capability to a phone or tablet that does not expose it.
It is not a modem, router, Wi-Fi adapter or network switch.
What to do
13 · Best practice
Recommended. Use a host USB-C data/OTG port and a four-pair Cat5e-or-better cable.
Recommended. Keep Nintendo Switch and other host system software current.
Recommended. Install the AX88179A driver on systems the manual identifies as driver-required.
Recommended. Check the negotiated link separately from the internet result.
Recommended. Keep the metal body ventilated during long transfers.
What not to do
14 · Common mistakes
Avoid. Do not connect a charger to the RJ45 socket or expect the adapter to charge the host.
Avoid. Do not claim Gigabit application throughput from a 1Gbps negotiated link.
Avoid. Do not expect a charge-only USB-C port to carry Ethernet.
Avoid. Do not force or sharply bend the braided lead.
Avoid. Do not connect a PoE load expecting the adapter to power it.
Warnings and limitations
15 · Read before use
Warning / limitation 1. A wired connection gives the host access to the connected network; use trusted networks and keep the host firewall active.
Warning / limitation 2. Legacy Windows versions can remain vulnerable even when a driver installs.
Warning / limitation 3. Mild warmth under sustained traffic can be normal. Disconnect the adapter if heat, smell or repeated resets become abnormal.
Warning / limitation 4. Use undamaged connectors and disconnect equipment before servicing wall cabling.
Warning / limitation 5. Mobile-device compatibility depends on USB host/OTG Ethernet support, not on the presence of USB-C alone.
Troubleshooting by symptom
16 · Diagnostics
Ethernet interface is missing. Confirm USB data/OTG support, reconnect directly and install the AX88179A driver if the manual requires it.
Link negotiates at 100Mbps. Replace the cable with a four-pair Cat5e-or-better lead and check both endpoints for Gigabit support.
Phone or tablet does not respond. Check that the device and OS expose USB Ethernet/OTG and that external USB accessories are permitted.
Switch does not connect. Update console system software, verify the supported USB connection mode and test the Ethernet cable at another device.
Internet is unavailable despite link. Check DHCP, gateway, router uplink and ISP status; the adapter itself does not provide internet service.
