Fast SSDs can become hot, and storage errors can destroy data. Warmth is normal; abnormal heat, repeated disconnection or a burning smell is not.
- The enclosure surface can become noticeably warm while moving large files because the body is part of the thermal path.
- Sustained speed can fall when the SSD, bridge or host thermally throttles; this is different from the advertised interface ceiling.
- USB bus power varies by host. Phones, tablets and unpowered hubs may not provide enough current for every high-performance SSD.
- Automatic sleep, TRIM and UASP depend on system support and may behave differently across filesystems, virtual machines and console platforms.
- Formatting or initialising permanently changes disk metadata. Identify the correct device before approving any operation.
- No hot-swap promise is retained. Always eject, wait for activity to finish and disconnect before opening or replacing the SSD.
- Keep the enclosure dry, do not open it while powered and stop use if the USB socket, cable or housing becomes damaged.

Read the negotiated link and disk state separately. A drive can be detected at 10Gbps or less and still function normally.

- Visible in disk utility only: the SSD may need a partition and compatible filesystem; do not format it if it contains needed data.
- Link limited to 10Gbps: verify that the host explicitly supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. Many Mac ports do not expose that USB mode.
